Call For Papers(研究発表募集)

40th International Conference

International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations

(国際比較文明学会)

Tues-Thursday, June 15 - 17, 2010

Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, USA

Main Theme:     Civilizational Futures

Sub-Themes:

What roles religion, in the past, today and tomorrow?

Is a global civilization developing?  How would we know?

How can past civilizational crises inform the present?

Does ecology matter, or are these crises driven entirely by culture, politics, religion and other social phenomena?

Eternal Themes:

What is a “Civilization” anyway?

How are civilizations distinct from nations, societies and cultures?  Are they correlated with empires?

How many are there in human history … and today?

Does history repeat itself?

What is the nature of the relationship between technology and civilization?

Are civilizational transformations necessarily traumatic, or can civilizations “transform” peacefully?

When civilizations “clash” can they hybridize by combining strengths positively?  Or must one die?

How do art, language and culture matter compared to the ancient drivers of commerce and military affairs?

Submission Deadline:  March 15, 2010
